About Entonox

Self-administered pain relief, trusted by maternity wards.

Entonox is a 50/50 mix of medical nitrous oxide and oxygen, used worldwide as a fast-acting, self-administered analgesic. The patient breathes the gas through a demand valve and mouthpiece or mask, the analgesic effect kicks in within seconds, and it wears off just as quickly when they stop. No needles, no recovery time, and the patient stays fully conscious throughout.

It is best known as the “gas and air” used during labour, but its applications go well beyond maternity. Ambulances use it for fracture and trauma pain on the way to hospital. Dental clinics use it for short, painful procedures. Physiotherapists use it during dressing changes and joint manipulations. Anywhere short, sharp pain needs to be managed without sedation, entonox is the standard tool.

Applications

Where entonox earns its place.

Entonox is the standard pain relief gas for short, painful procedures and emergencies. Here is how labour wards, ambulances, dental clinics, and physio practices across Dubai use it.

Most popular

Labour wards and maternity

The classic use. Self-administered pain relief during labour, where the mother holds the demand valve and breathes the gas through contractions. Effective without affecting the baby, leaves the mother fully alert, and clears from the system within minutes. Standard equipment in maternity wards across Dubai.

Emergency

Ambulance and emergency response

Pre-hospital pain management for fractures, burns, and trauma cases on the way to the emergency room. Paramedics rely on entonox because it works fast, the patient controls the dose, and it wears off before handover. Standard kit on most UAE ambulance services.

Dental

Dental procedures and minor surgery

Used for short, painful dental procedures like extractions and tough fillings, and for nervous patients who need help getting through a routine appointment. The patient stays conscious and can drive home shortly after. Increasingly common in Dubai dental clinics offering modern pain management.

Clinics

Physio, wound care, and minor procedures

Burn dressing changes, post-surgical wound care, joint manipulations, and other short procedures that hurt enough to need pain relief but not enough for sedation. Entonox makes these procedures easier on the patient and faster for the clinician. Used in physio clinics, wound centres, and outpatient settings.

What our entonox cylinders look like.

Our entonox cylinders are high-grade steel, pre-filled with the certified 50/50 medical mix, and sealed with a tamper-proof valve. Per UAE colour-coding standards, entonox cylinders are blue with a white shoulder, distinct from pure N2O (blue) and pure oxygen (white) so they cannot be confused on a busy ward. Each ships with a clear label showing gas type, fill date, and certification.

FAQs

Common questions about entonox.

Entonox is a pre-mixed 50/50 blend of medical nitrous oxide (N2O) and oxygen (O2). The patient inhales it through a mouthpiece or face mask connected to a demand valve, which only releases gas when the patient breathes in. The analgesic effect kicks in within 20 to 30 seconds, and clears from the system within minutes once the patient stops breathing it. Because the patient controls the dose, it is one of the safest pain relief gases available.

Pure N2O is 100% nitrous oxide, while entonox is exactly 50% N2O and 50% oxygen. Pure N2O is used in dentistry as a sedation gas (mixed with oxygen at the point of use through a sedation machine). Entonox is pre-mixed so it can be self-administered without a blending machine, which is why it is the standard choice for ambulances, labour wards, and clinics where simplicity and safety matter. The mix ensures the patient always gets enough oxygen alongside the analgesic.

Entonox prices depend on cylinder size and whether you are refilling or buying new. We offer trade pricing for hospitals, clinics, ambulance services, and physio practices on regular delivery schedules. Send us a WhatsApp message with your facility type and usage, and we will send a current quote.

At low temperatures (below around 6 to 10 degrees Celsius), the nitrous oxide in entonox can separate from the oxygen and form a liquid layer at the bottom of the cylinder. This means the gas drawn from the cylinder would no longer be a true 50/50 mix, which is unsafe for the patient. Always store entonox cylinders above 10 degrees Celsius, and if a cylinder has been exposed to cold conditions, invert it three times before use to remix the contents. In Dubai, this is rarely an issue indoors, but worth noting for refrigerated storage areas.

Yes, we deliver entonox across Dubai to hospitals, maternity wards, ambulance services, dental clinics, and physiotherapy practices. We run regular delivery routes for medical clients on standing orders so the cylinder is always there when the patient needs it. WhatsApp us about setting up a refill schedule for your facility.
You need a demand-valve regulator (which only releases gas when the patient inhales), a length of medical tubing, and either a mouthpiece or a face mask with one-way valves. The demand valve is the key component, it ensures the patient self-doses and cannot over-administer. We can supply complete entonox setups including the regulator and patient circuit, or just the cylinder if you already have the equipment. Message us with what you need.
