A dip tube cylinder has an internal tube running from the valve down to the bottom of the cylinder. Instead of drawing gas from the top, it pulls liquid CO2 from the bottom. That liquid then vaporizes downstream of the regulator, giving you a far higher and more consistent CO2 throughput than a standard gas-phase cylinder can deliver.

Common questions about dip tube CO2.
A standard CO2 cylinder is a gas-phase cylinder. The valve is at the top, and you draw CO2 vapor from the top of the cylinder. Most uses, including small bars, aquariums, and welding, work fine with this. A dip tube cylinder has an internal pipe (the dip tube) running from the valve down to the bottom of the cylinder. This means you draw liquid CO2 directly, which then vaporizes downstream. Liquid CO2 throughput is far higher and more consistent than gas-phase, which is why high-volume dispense and bulk operations need dip tube cylinders.
It depends on your setup. Small bars with one or two taps and short beer lines usually run fine on a standard CO2 cylinder. But if you have a long bank of taps, walk-in cooler kegs, multiple simultaneous pours, or you have noticed your standard CO2 cylinder freezing up at peak service, you almost certainly need dip tube CO2. From the outside, they look almost identical. The difference is internal. Cylinders should be clearly labeled as dip tube (or "siphon") on the cylinder itself, and the valve may have a different colour stripe depending on the supplier. Always check the label or ask us before connecting. Connecting a dip tube cylinder to a system designed for gas-phase CO2 (or vice versa) will not work correctly and can damage equipment.
